Tweet or Call the Police?

March 28, 2009 by Fred Abaroa · Leave a Comment

A strange man broke into Revision3 COO David Prager’s home March 10, 2009.

What would you do in this situation? A true Tweep would twitter of course and here is what he tweeted:

  1. ok, maybe I should lock my door – I swear a random dude just walked into my bathroom and I can’t believe I haven’t freaked out
  2. and I can’t believe I’m tweeting about it while he is still in there — in wonder of he is sleep walking – or if maybe I should freak out
  3. ok – he’s still in the bathroom and Im now thinking a combo of hobo and drunk and sleepwalking dude – he seems late 20s – hmmm what next ?
  4. I’m thinking the hobo part cause I can smell BO – and I really am wondering why I haven’t freaked the F out
  5. maybe I should mention I live in a relatively rustic studio apartment in SF

  6. there is no TP in my bathroom – wonder if that is complicating things for him – was gonna wait for him to come out and kick him out

  7. hmmm — should I call the cops like you guys have recommended? find a blunt object before opening the door? my gut tells me he’s harmless
  8. but … I could be wrong about the harmless assumption
  9. I’m now thinking maybe he’s passed out in my bathroom — I guess that’s better than violent — but I have no idea. time to freak out??about 1 hour ago from Tweetie

  10. ok – about to make move – putting shoes on first
  11. glad that GF wasn’t here
  12. ok – have weapon if I need it – but don’t plan on any confrontation with it – about to go in
  13. haven’t gone in yet ….. debating calling cops but just feel it’s not needed for some reason (and probably contrary to all logic)
  14. ok – still haven’t done anything – he is still in there – gonna setup a ustream now I think – standby

Breakup over Twitter??? Come on now!

March 23, 2009 by Fred Abaroa · Leave a Comment

So the latest Word On The Tweet is the breakup between John Mayer and Jennifer Aniston. Apparently John was too busy to call Jen back but not too busy to twitter. Hmmmmmm Well Jen, if you really want him Tweet it. Nothing says love like a tweet. She ought to know by now there are plenty of MILT (Mothers I’d Like To Tweet) out the getting the attention of tweeps every where. Let’s take a look at some of John Mayers, “oh I just have to tweet this before I call Jen” Tweets:

  • I don’t care what anyone else says, I call him Clive Owens and I like it.
  • Life is like walking through a funhouse. It’s dark, people are pushing, and you can’t turn around. You just follow the cracks of light.
  • The night I landed there after coughDROPPINGOUTcough I wondered if I was out of my mind. I am, but it worked. RT @Marcelina88 What happened?
  • Once, for about 30 minutes back in May of ‘98, the night I moved to Atlanta. RT @Sus_eQ do you ever regret your career choice?
  • Sometimes I think “Do you know where those songs have been?” RT @roseadam do you ever wonder what other artists are doing with your songs?
  • @Alexandrahhh I should read what the tabloids say I did each week and then go out and actually do them! Like a Cheesedick’s Almanac.
  • No. I have a hard enough time living up to my own image, let alone others’ of me. RT @cressesgirl22 but do you read articles about yourself?
  • RT @Twirrim I get neurotic enough listening to me doing my own stuff. Listening to others cover would cripple me with self-recrimination
  • Because I still can’t believe that my songs are known by others. RT @GabrielleWhite that’s interesting. why do you get embarrassed?
  • No. I get embarrassed. Can’t explain it. RT @lisminusa do you ever youtube search yourself to watch other musicians do covers of your songs?
  • Let it be said again, DMB’s ‘Under The Table and Dreaming’ is a melodic tour de force. It’s insane.

and of course my favorite:

  • How many megapixels are my eyes?

Face it Jen anyone wondering how many megapixels are his eyes may not be the best match for you.

NBA Player Tweets During Halftime

March 22, 2009 by Jeff Parsons · Leave a Comment

charlie_villanuevaEver get in trouble for tweeting on the job? Most people can probably tweet unnoticed in the workplace, unless your workplace happens to be on a basketball court for a professional NBA team.

Milwaukee Bucks forward Charlie Villanueva (cv31) got a talking to by coach Scott Skiles about sending this tweet during halftime of a recent game against the Boston Celtics:

Skiles felt sending a tweet during halftime gives the impression that Villanueva wasn’t focused. The team was trying to beat the NBA World Champs after all.

Villanueva does bring up a good point in a later tweet about a bit of the hypocrisy that exists.

Excellent point. How was the info in his tweet any different than what he’d be saying in a halftime interview? It was more concise and still reached nearly 10,000 followers. It’s a classic case of lack of respect for new media. If NBC had requested a quote from Villanueva for their Twitter page, would Skiles have brought it up?

At least the NBA is safe from player tweets during the game. I’m pretty sure basketball shorts don’t have pockets for Blackberries.

Jimmy Fallon – @jimmyfallon

March 20, 2009 by Jeff Parsons · Leave a Comment

ajimmy2There are celebrities on Twitter that have accounts just because it’s the in thing to do these days, and there are celebrities on Twitter who have accounts because they actually enjoy using it. Jimmy Fallon (@jimmyfallon) definitely enjoys tweeting.

As the new host of Late Night, Fallon has plenty to say in the twitterverse. Unlike many other celeb tweeps who have “their people” do the tweeting for them, this really is Fallon. He appeared recently on an episode of Diggnation mentioning how much he enjoys Twitter. (and to plug his new Late Night gig)

He’ll tweet about things on Late Night:

Ting Tings sing “That’s Not My Name” tonight. Love them. Kardashians funny as well. OnLateNight nbc after leno. (if you didn’t know already)

Can’t forget Bill Paxton he was super cool. We went kindof all over the place with the interview but – he was a good sport

Post pictures via Twitpic:

@Julie_Boswell yes, now at Rachel Ray – then back to 30 rock. http://twitpic.com/26nc9

Get the hotline to a radio station to call in for an interview:

@LIVE105 again – what number do I call? You’re not making it easy. Thanks.

He’ll even tweet about his dental issues:

Chipped my front tooth. Just got it laser bonded. I can now bite through steel. (only with the one tooth)

Fallon seems to be very generous with his replies too. Not always as easy thing to do when you have nearly 400,000 followers as of this writing.

Jimmy Fallon gets what Twitter is about. Too many celebrities miss the opportunity to interact with their followers, and instead use their twitter account as just another way to broadcast themselves. Will Late Night with Jimmy Fallon have a long run like Letterman and Conan before him? Who knows. Whichever way it goes for Fallon, he’s bound to be tweeting the whole time.

Facebook More Like Twitter

March 16, 2009 by Jeff Parsons · Leave a Comment

Facebook 3.0The people at Facebook know a good thing when they see it. Facebook tried to acquire Twitter a few months back, but Twitter execs still think they are on the verge of finding a revenue model that works and want to make a go of it on their own thank you very much. So instead of buying Twitter, Facebook did the next best thing by becoming more like it.

This past week Facebook rolled out its new design that lo and behold looked a lot like the Twitter home page. This twitterfication was not met with open arms by a lot of the Facebook community. Some people don’t like change, and this is the second time that Facebook has made such a change within a year.

So what’s new in Facebook? Status updates now ask a different question. Rather than asking “What are you doing” and following it with “(your name) is”, Facebook now asks “What’s on your mind” and drops your name. This lets status updates be about anything you like, kind of like…um…Twitter. Old habit die hard though. I’ve noticed many people posting status messages to fit the previously mandatory “(your name) is” insertion. It still works that way, but at least now you have the option to post something other than what you’re doing and not have it be grammatically incorrect.

Facebook also has a news feed that looks like a complete rip off of Twitter. Users have a timeline that updates with the latest posts of their friends, including everything from status updates to photo posts. Wall posts even show up in the timeline in a simlar was as replies in Twitter. Rather than using the @ symbol, Facebook uses an arrow to show where the post is going from and to. (username1 —>username2)

What’s this mean for Twitter? Nothing really. There’s no doubt Twitter is gaining in popularity, but it’s really a hard thing for some people to understand even with the help of Twitter in Plain English. Those they get it love it. Those that don’t understand hate it. Those that use Twitter and Facebook understand what Facebook is trying to do. They’re really two different groups of people, and two services which I believe can sustain themselves seperately, unlike Myspace which is facing a real challenge now from Facebook.

The real question I have is can Twitter come up with a business model? They keep getting capital shoved their way, yet I haven’t seen any steps toward monetizing Twitter yet. If they don’t do it soon, Facebook my finally aquire what it’s trying to emulate.
